Bush's Mantra: "Keep Fear Alive"

In an article that appeared in the Washington Times on July 7, 2003, I wrote that the strategic aim of terrorism "is to spread fear and destroy freedom."  The terrorists, I explained, know how to exploit the intrinsic power of fear.  They realize

"... that fear will subvert our freedoms and force us to disengage from the rest of the world ... This contest [the war on terrorism] is essentially about the future of freedom."

Little did anyone know back then that Bush and Cheney would complete the work of the terrorists and stamp the face of fear across the very fabric of American social and political life.  Bin Laden could never have imagined better allies than Bush and Cheney.   Their politics has been the politics of fear.  The  mantra of their leadership has been: "Keep Fear Alive!"
